Why Collective For The New Malaya?

Collective: A united movement.

New : For change can only come with new ideas.

Malaya : Because in the age of Malaya we, the people, found common ground despite our overwhelming differences in the hope of becoming a free nation.

To Malaysian Londoners: the Collective is holding a peaceful protest on Friday 4 September 2009 from 9.30am at the Malaysian High Commission (45-46 Belgrave Square London SW1X 8QT) for the reasons below. Please join us if you are in town and willing to show us your support :)

Public protests without a police permit are illegal in multi-ethnic Malaysia, and Malaysians are routinely arrested and jailed without trial for “crimes” as small as holding candlelight vigils, peaceful gatherings to demand fair elections or wearing black in symbolic support of the opposition party. “Maintaining racial harmony” is the oft-used justification by the ruling UMNO administration for the necessity of this law limiting freedom of speech.

However on Friday 28 August 2009, a blatant display of racial and religious hatred now famously known as the “Cow-Head Protests” was allowed to take place, as riot police stood by and watched.

In this despicable act of sacrilege, 50 Malay-Muslims in the suburb of Shah Alam in the state of Selangor protested the relocation of a Hindu temple by brandishing a severed cow's head (considered a sacred animal to Hindus) and threatening bloodshed.

Despite the clear-cut racist overtones and severity of this incident, no coverage has been allowed in the government-controlled mass media. What's more, far from taking swift and stern action against those responsible the Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Hishamuddin Hussein has since publicly defended and justified the actions of this uncivilised mob, saying they were simply making their voices heard and warning “irresponsible parties not to provoke racial sentiments” by questioning this event further.

It is a spectacular exposure of the double-standards and hypocrisy in Malaysian government, where a united “1 Malaysia” is the catchy claim but where different races and religions are subject to different rights and laws.

The Collective For The New Malaya represents a group of peaceful Malaysians campaigning for an end to ethno-religious apartheid and divisive, race-based administration. Muslim or non-Muslim, Malay or otherwise, we believe all citizens of Malaysia should be entitled to the basic human right of equality regardless of colour, creed or political affiliation.

  2. p/s: i do not condone the unislamic method used by the ss23 protesters. but i also do not condone bias, politically motivated protests.

ur being used by certain parties u know that.

just do things sincerely lah! things that benefit EVERYONE. not just your party.

(u showed this by condemning BN policies, so ur being Pakatan here. not neutrals. Thus, i reject this movement for being politically motivated.)

People, dont be blind by this leader wannabes.

  3. i'm sorry mr. jeg but i beg to differ. this has nothing to do with being on any side of any party at all...i think this is something which has been considerably regretted by many if not almost all malaysians...what the protestors did last friday should be condemned...and as to the statement released by the home minister defending the group which carried out the protest, it should rightly be condemned. for a person who is supposed to be taking care of the interest of the country collectively, the fact that he choose instead to protect the interest of this group who promised that blood will be shed if their demand is not met is not something that is pleasing to the ears or our hearts...i'm sure if a similar statement was made by a politician from the opposition, it would have resulted in a worse outcry (and this would not only be from the rakyat mind you)...so yes...no one here is being bigatory or even 'politiking' as a matter of fact...we're merely seeking that the 1Malaysia concept is upheld...whollistically...

  4. it's just dirty politics. this group is an opportunist. they just want to show that MALAYSIA IS UNSTABLE.

BY HOOK AND BY CROOK, they MUST show the world MALAYSIA is UNSTABLE so that people would think there is a need for a new GOVERNMENT.

Over 1 incident? As a Muslim I detest those cow head protesters and they should be jailed. But do we need to go on the street protest again to show how ugly our country is in front of UK ppl?

  6. Jeg, who are you and what kind of flawed logic are you operating on?!?!

"by condeming BN policies you are with Pakatan" how did you arrive at that?! - BN happens to be form the government that has given an almost carte blanche for acts with malicious intentions such as these - If Pakatan or any other political party/coalition were to be in 'power' and act as BN has this PEACEFUL protest would occur too.

How about in the spirit of "We love Malaysia and even though are living overseas, we are still holding our government accountable for its (in)actions" hey?

And btw, the protest was in front of the M'sian embassy. not the UK Parliament. I think that says something.

And uhm, as a fellow Malaysian, am glad to hear you voice out your views chiding the actions and intentions of the 'cow head protesters' but unlike you, believe that (considering things from a political and economical perspective), our country IS pretty UNSTABLE. but that's just my humble opinion, which I'm entitled to, as are you.

  7. Jeg,
I'm glad you agree that it is a deplorable display.

however, i have to question how does protesting show our "ugly" side? doesnt sitting back and allowing it to go on say even more?
